In this lecture, the implications of the increasingly multi-level nature governance for the French, British, and Dutch national bureaucracies will be explored. While European integration seems an obvious driver for change, evidence shows that relative cross-national convergence is primarily explained by economic and national factor, rather than by EU-integration. This will be demonstrated with a focus on political-administrative relations and the strengthened role of the media in politics and administration. The lecture will conclude with more general lessons and observations regarding international comparative research of bureaucracies.
