How can Old Europe and Rising Asia work together?

Multimedia: Webcast |

Synopsis:

The Eurozone crisis is prompting an important rethink of the way the European Union works, its future direction and inter-action with key partners. More than before, the crisis has highlighted the need for close global cooperation and joint action to tackle key 21st Century challenges. It would be wrong - as some have tried to do - to write off Europe as yesterday's power. Even as it engages in much-needed reflection on its future, Europe still matters. Rising Asia and Old Europe need to work together because:

  • EU holds many keys to future frameworks for global govenance
  • The EU model for integration remains an inspiration for other regional organisations especially given ASEAN nation's lack of political integration
  • EU's predominance of international trade will persist
  • Europe is a huge market and investment destination which Asia needs to ensure high growth rates
  • EU sets globally recognised standards for food and consumer products, cars, chemicals, aircraft emissions
  • Europe's centuries of wealth are far from being eclipsed by Asia's decades of growth
  • Europe and Asia need to work together to tackle common threats to global instability (climate change, resource competition, overpopulation, etc)
