Impact of Demographic Change on Developing Asia’s Economic Growth and Old-Age Income Support

Synopsis:

Developing Asia as a whole is experiencing a rapid demographic transition toward older populations, although different countries are at different stages of the transition. We document Asia's population aging, and analyze its impact on  economic growth and old-age income support. Aging populations pose two big challenges for Asian policymakers: (1) sustaining strong economic growth in the face of less favorable demographic conditions while (2) developing socioeconomic systems that can provide economic security to growing numbers of elderly. Successfully addressing these two challenges will be vital for ensuring Asia's continued success in the medium and long term.
