South – South East Asia: Rediscovery of Relation

Synopsis:

Relations between the two areas have existed and flourished over centuries. Each has carried the religious and cultural influences of the other. In the 19th century colonization reconnected the people in a different form. More people from South Asia have chosen to move to the East. Following the tremendous economic successes in the ASEAN region, South Asia has started looking eastwards. However, relations at the official levels have not taken a regional dimension and have been left to individual countries to develop. The presentation briefly surveys the main relations and trends for the future.
