Analysis of impact of health shocks on household income and expenditures in Vietnam Health shocks can have important impacts on household welfare both because of the high costs of paying for health care as well as the lost labour time or even death or disability to working members of the household. This study analyzes the prevalence of major health shocks and the impact of health shocks on income and consumption using household living standards survey data for Vietnam. It is preliminary work in part of a larger study that will also examine coping strategies of households and the extent to which Vietnam's health insurance scheme can help to soften the impact of health shocks.
