The Malay Leadership Mystique - A Clinical Approach to Understanding Malay Leadership

Synopsis:

The talk is based on my Doctoral research on Malay leadership using the psychodynamic lens. It is aimed at understanding the leadership qualities of Malays in politics where they have successfully managed Malaysia since Independence. The same Malays, however, have not been successful in economic and business leadership. The talk would focus on the contextual factors leading to the lack of success of Malays in business in spite of positive discrimination accorded to them since 1971 when the New Economic Policy was formulated. Using a combination of different cultural models, 360-degree feedback instruments, focus group discussions and expert panel interviews, the author makes some preliminary findings to understand the state of Malay leadership. This research also draws on the theories of large group psychology to explain the Malay dilemma in business leadership.
