Multimedia: Webcast |

Synopsis:

David Plotke will talk about the main accomplishments of the first years of the Obama administration as well as the limitations of President Obama’s policies. He will discuss how President Obama’s record will influence the upcoming midterm elections in November and his prospects for reelection in 2012. In domestic politics, this is centrally a matter of economic policy and its results, but a number of other issues are important.

Although foreign policy was only one issue in the 2008 election, Obama’s victory was regarded as partly due to public dissatisfaction with the foreign policy of the Bush administration. Yet Obama’s administration has by no means overturned all of the policies of the Bush administration. Plotke will assess both the achievements and the problems of the American foreign policy under Obama in this context with special attention the East and Southeast Asia.

In assessing both the domestic and foreign policies of the Obama administration, Plotke will aim to identify their significance for the broad course of American politics
