The Oxford Martin Commission Report Launch

Former World Trade Organization Director General Pascal Lamy visited the LKY School on 18 February to deliver a public lecture and launch the Oxford Martin Commission Report for Future Generations, which focuses on the long-term challenges facing the world today and what practical actions decision-makers can take to build a sustainable, inclusive and resilient future. The Martin Commission, chaired by Mr Lamy, included Dean of the LKY School Kishore Mahbubani, Mr Nandan Nilekani, former CEO of Infosys, Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen of Harvard University and Lord Nicholas Stern of LSE, amongst other global thought leaders.

In an exclusive interview with the LKY School, Mr Lamy gave his thoughts on the importance of public policy education, the challenge of inequality in Asia, and the need for bottom-up efforts to improve environmental sustainability. He also advised students in public policy that “you need to really want to make this world a better place”.

Synopsis:

The international institutions we have at present are ill-equipped to combat the increasingly global scope of the problems we face in the 21st Century.  Recognising this, the Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford has assembled a group of leading intellectuals and policymakers in an effort to diagnose and remedy some of our most pressing global challenges. Now for the Long Term, a recently released report by the Oxford Martin Commission for Future Generations, is the result of a year of research and debate by commissioners and aims to arm us with concrete policy measures to tackle the obstacles that stand in the way of worldwide progress. These bold reforms include forming new coalitions among members of the private and public sectors to counter the effects of climate change, and ensuring greater relevance and accountability for publicly funded international institutions through the establishment of sunset clauses.

Oxford Martin Commission chair and former World Trade Organization Director-General Pascal Lamy will join Oxford Martin commissioner and Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy Kishore Mahbubani in the Singapore launch of Now for the Long Term, with an interactive discussion on the far-reaching implications and potential impact of the report.  Mr Lamy and Prof Mahbubani will also discuss next steps towards making the Oxford Martin Commission’s vision a reality.
