The Republic of Learning: Why backing universities is a vital challenge for policymakers

Synopsis:

In 2010, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation asked The University of Melbourne’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glyn Davis, to deliver a series of public broadcast lectures on the theme of the burgeoning higher education sector in Australia, Asia and the world. The lecture series became known as the Republic of Learning.
Following Erasmus’ famous idea from 1522 – “I should like to be a citizen of the world” – Professor Davis argues today’s university sector has become a vital influence, shaping and being shaped by globalisation, in its social, economic and technological aspects. He suggests policy-makers everywhere need to engage more closely with the sector.
