Towards a Nuclear-Free World

The LKY School, together with the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Singapore, organised a panel discussion entitled “Towards a Nuclear-Free World”. The discussion was organised in conjunction with the International Day Against Nuclear Tests on 29 August. The UN resolution to promote the ban of nuclear tests was adopted in 2009 under the initiation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The panel was chaired by Dean Mahbubani while Professor Kanti Bajpai, Vice Dean and Gopi Rethinaraj, Assistant Professor spoke about the pros and cons of using nuclear energy. Ambassador Yerlan Baudarbek-Kozhatayev of Kazakhstan, spoke about the consequences of atomic bomb tests conducted by the Soviet Union in eastern Kazakhstan. He said 456 nuclear tests were conducted in Kazakhstan between 1949 and 1989, with the result that about 200,000 people in Kazakhstan now suffer from various types of cancers.

“Embrace a world free of Nuclear Weapons”

The 29th of August was declared International Day against Nuclear Tests by the United Nations General Assembly through the adoption of resolution 64/35 initiated by the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2009. The day is to inform and educate the public on the importance of the nuclear test ban in creating a safer and more secure world. To support this initiative the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan are co-organising a panel discussion to address the role of Kazakhstan in championing the efforts of banning nuclear tests and promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Kazakhstan is the first country in history to close a nuclear test site on its territory. The panel of experts in the field of disarmament will be debating the feasibility of nuclear disarmament. The discussion will be opened by the H.E. Yerlan Baudarbek-Kozhatayev, the Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.
