One-table Dinner with Madam Halimah Yacob

The Parliament is a symptomatic reflection of the inner well-being of a nation-state. Good governance is paramount in the conduct of parliamentary business as it presides over the legislation of new laws, controls the state’s finances and acts as the critical and inquisitorial voice that checks on the actions of the Executive. What are the factors to consider when Parliament deliberates and debates over new policy bills? How would the Parliament represent and balance the interest of both businesses and employees in today’s increasingly uncertain geo-political and social landscape? Are there opportunities for greater collaboration between the Government, unions and businesses to optimise productivity and enhance the work experiences in Singapore?

Mdm Halimah Yacob, the Speaker of the Parliament House of Singapore and a strong advocate for tripartite relations, has agreed to spend the evening with the heads of IPS’ Corporate Associates to discuss about the roles and importance of the Speaker and the Parliament of Singapore to facilitate debates on policies aimed at creating a conducive economic environment for businesses to thrive and Singaporeans to achieve their aspirations and dreams.

Madam HALIMAH Yacob was elected the Speaker of Parliament in January 2013. She is the first woman Speaker of Parliament.

She has been a Member of Parliament since 2001 serving the Jurong Group Representation Constituency and then in 2015 in the Marsiling-Yew Tee Group Representation Constituency. She has previously served as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

Madam Halimah was educated at the Singapore Chinese Girls School and Tanjong Katong Girls School. In 1978, she graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours). She was called to the Singapore Bar in 1981. In 2001, she attained a Master of Laws from NUS. In 2016 she was conferred an honorary Doctor Of Laws Degree by the NUS.

In 1978, Madam Halimah started her career with the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and has held various positions, such as Director of the Singapore Institute of Labour Studies, Director of the Women’s Development Secretariat, Director of the Legal Services Department, Executive Secretary of the United Workers of Electronics and Electrical Industries, and Deputy Secretary General of NTUC.

Madam Halimah also sat on various Boards such as the Temasek Cares Board, Jurong Town Corporation, Housing & Development Board, Economic Development Board, NUS Board of Trustees, Nanyang Polytechnic Board of Governors, Tribunal for Maintenance of Parents, NTUC Thrift and Loan Co-operative and Mendaki Sense. She is also a member of the Governing Body of ILO, the Geneva-based International Labour Organisation. Mdm Halimah had also served on the Economic Review Committee in 2001.

For her commitment in providing women with better opportunities in the workforce, Madam Halimah was awarded the Berita Harian “Achiever of the Year” in 2001, the Her World Magazine’s “Women of the Year” in 2004, AWARE Heroine Award 2011 and the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame in 2014.
