Seminar on “SG50 and Beyond: Singapore’s Skills Training Systems” and Book Launch of "A Breakthrough in Vocational and Technical Education" by Law Song Seng


This event which is held by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) in partnership with the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and World Scientific Publishing (WSP) marks the publication of a book on the successful reform process of the country’s vocational training system written by the first Chief Executive Officer of ITE, Dr Law Song Seng titled, ‘Breakthrough in Vocational and Technical Education. The Singapore Story’.

There will be a panel discussion on strengthening Singapore’s applied education pathways to ensure that Singaporean youths are work-ready and have fulfilling careers as well as on how the ITE system in particular contributes to our social and economic development. The three speakers on the panel are the author, Dr Law;  Mr Choo Chiau Beng, Senior Adviser, Keppel Corporation Limited and member of the ASPIRE Committee (2013-2014); and Dr Irene Ng, of the Department of Social Work at the National University of Singapore.

That will be followed by a dialogue session with Senior Minister of State for Education, Ms Indranee Rajah who chaired the Aspire Committee of 2014 which made important recommendations on strengthening the vocational education system in Singapore and who now is a member of the SkillsFuture Council that will implement those recommendations.

Also, ITE will host two half-hour tours of ITE College Central’s training facilities. Tours will begin at the Registration Desk at 8.45am and at 12.15pm.

Visitors will be brought to the Design Excellence Centre which showcases student portfolios, in-house and industry projects from the School of Deisgn and Media. They will also visit the Aerospace Hub of the School of Engineering which features a 1,200 square metre hangar, workshops and a gallery.
